Default Dynamic Mic Noise

Meanwhile I notice that the OP says he needs to use two microphones for visual purposes. Will both of those mics be live? If so, and if the capsules are apart, he may run into problems with comb filtering.

Few mics have hum bucking coils fitted, suggesting that most users regard it as a non problem and simply move the mic away from the hum source.

Some of the Rode mics, particularly those for on-camera
mounting, have humbucking coils.

** Nearly all Rode mics are condenser types, including ones meant for on camera use.

Which models have bucking coils?

It looks like all of the camera-mounted mics have them. I
didn't look at the others.

** What exactly ARE you looking at ??

Rode make no mention of hum bucking coils in their specifications or advertising.

FYI A hum bucking coil ( if used ) fits around the outside of a dymamic mic's capsule in the same plane as the voice coil. It is designed to produce an
identical signal in response to an external hum field as the voice coil, but with no response to sound.

so I'm not clear if the OP determined,
was his problem due to:

1) high frequency RFI from the cell tower
2) low frequency magnetic interference from nearby power equipment

I have never seen a passive dynamic mic susceptible to #1.
(The pre-amp it is connected to can be of course)

** Not likely at all.

2) low frequency magnetic interference from nearby power equipment

** The OP has changed to using mics with a hum bucking coil and solved the problem. One of the original mics tried was an SM58, which are highly sensitive to mag fields since there is an unshielded tranny in the handle.

BTW:

Since some folk seem to be unaware of what a microphone hum bucking coil looks like or where to even look for one - I tried to find a decent pic on Google Images with no luck.

The obsolete Shure Beta58 has a very prominent bucking coil you can see by just winding off the mesh grille.

If anyone can find a pic of one please post a link.

The Beta58 is alive and well, now called the Beta 58A. Swee****er, among others, sells them:

In my one experience eith a Beta 58A, it sounded better than any SM58 I'd heard. The fact that Tom Russell was singing into it didn't hurt.

Peace,
Paul

** Not true.

The Beta58 was Shure's first attempt to modernise & upgrade the venerable SM58.

Among several other changes, the Beta58 featured a hum bucking coil and eliminated the transformer in the handle by using a higher impedance diaphragm coil - 250ohm instead of circa 13ohm, which allowed direct output.

It remained on sale for a short time in the early 1990s, before being withdrawn and replaced with the Beta58A in which the hum bucking coil was removed but strangely the transformer returned along with a circa 20ohm diaphragm.
