Obviously, things aren't going to get that extreme - if
people are going to have a product to sell.

You obviously don't know what marketing departments are
capable of.
There are already examples of HD/Blu Ray disks no better
than the standard DVD, but at higher cost.

I have no doubt that is either true, or close to being true.
