How would you implement low cost home ambient system? I want to have
the same sound in each room of my home, and the sound should be
gentle, quiet. For that reason the solution should be based on
multiple loudspeakers, placed in each room. True?

I am going to make a heretical suggestion.

Purchase one decent FM-stereo Part-15 compliant whole-house
transmitter. There are many out there, but I am inclined towards the
Ramsey FM100B as it is quite flexible, user-friendly, works extremely
well and is a kit - I like kits.

That doesn't sound heretical at all. I was going to suggest a 70 volt
system, as it's a tried and true method of piping "ambient" music
throughout a large complex (think Muzak). The thing is, the
installation costs of all that wire makes it no longer a "low cost" system.

The radio transmitter is a great idea as one can pick up table radios at
garage sales for five to ten bucks each, making the marginal cost of
expanding the system very low.
