It's not a bad analogy, the electrons do travel through the wire, but at
any reasonable current density, they only travel at about walking speed,
pushing the ones in front along so that the effective speed of the
electricity transfer is almost light speed. The pushing is by the
repulsion between their negative charges.

Just a different way of looking at Don Pearce's electomagnetic force.

At 60Hz AC, the electrons "jiggle" a distance of an inch or two about a
central point.
