Default 5.1 surround headphones - Need advice

(Scott Dorsey) wrote in message ...

You can fake [surround] with DSP, using an impulse response for the room and then
an impulse response for your head (or an idealized head). The Lake DSP
guys pioneered doing it, and their system worked quite well at an AES show
a few years back, though at the expense of a huge amount of computational
power being needed.

The Lake algorithm actually takes less MIPS than you might expect.
They use a patented fast-convolution technique that they originally
developed for real-time room auralization. Surround similation over
headphones is a pretty similar problem. The Lake algorithm is what is
now being licensed as Dolby headphone.
