Hi RAHE,

If one wanted a "highend" hi-fi audio solution from a PC and for it to
be controlled by the PC itself (preferably with no interface of its
own), but with amplification and speakers being kind of remote in
location, what are the possibilities?

1 A good Firewire hardware device seems feasible. But how much distance
can a firewire connection run?

2 WLAN audio. Ex Apple Airport. Are they any good? 24/96?

John Atkinson published measurements of the Airport Express a few
months back:

http://www.stereophile.com/accessory...ple/index.html

It can only handle 16/44.1, but its performance was quite impressive
overall, assuming one uses its digital ouput with an external DAC. He
measured the AE's jitter at 2400 picoseconds, about ten times the level
he got when using an outboard DAC. (I'm not sure what these jitter
specs mean, and what level would cause an audible degradation in the
sound. If anyone can offer any wisdom on this, it would be
appreciated.)

He also mentioned a problem with some DACs losing the digital feed
between songs, and cutting off the first few seconds of each new song,
but I believe Apple fixed that problem with a firmware upgrade.
