I've played/heard one of these. "The sound is said to be 'like' a
stringed piano". There's the operative word - 'like' but nowhere near as
good as...

What this technology brings to the table is that since it is
mechanically like the mechanism of a real piano, it FEELS like a real
piano when played. This makes it perfect for piano students and
accomplished pianists alike who want to practice (especially without
bothering others using headphones) But make no mistake, this is merely a
synthesized electronic piano with a "real" keyboard*. Soundwise, a good
synthesizing keyboard played through a good stereo with any good pair of
audiophile-quality speakers will beat the sonic pants off of these
"stringless" Yamaha pianos (unless, of course, you pipe one of these
through the said-same stereo system. Then they'll sound, essentially,
the same).

* I don't want to seem to be belittling this product line. It is a major
breakthrough for real pianists (who have always complained that the feel
of electronic pianos just wasn't "right."). OTOH, I don't think
electronic keyboard artists will care all that much.
