TASCAM DP-01 is a reasonable choice. You don't really need the FX
version so you can save a few bucks there and perhaps put it toward a
better microphone.

Allow me to correct myself here. While you probably don't need the
built-in effects, the other difference between the models, and I don't
know why they tied these together, is that only the FX version has XLR
mic inputs with phantom power.

While you could get the non-FX model and save a little money there,
you'd need an outboard mic preamp in order to use any sort of
civilized microphone with it. While I have no idea how good the
built-in mic preamp in the FX is, it probably doesn't totally suck and
will allow you to start recording with a decent mic right away without
making another agonizing decision as to which mic preamp to buy to go
along with it. Any preamp that you buy for $100, the approximate
difference in price between the two TASCAM models, probably won't be
any better than the built-in one.

So, even though you don't have an immediate use for 8 tracks, I'll
give a nod to your consideration of the DP-01FX.
