Default Formatting a Memory Card for PCM-M10

Yes, you do, but the PCM-M10 has a built-in (non-removable)
4 GB flash memory drive as well as a slot for a Memory Stick
or Micro SD removable memory card. There's a menu entry that
allows you to select the one you want to record/play from
(or tell it to switch to the other one if the one you start
recording to fills up). Whichever one is currently selected
is the one that will get formatted when you Format from the
menu. It's pretty clear in the manual, but you have to first
understand that there's not just one place where data is
stored.

The menu is in firmware that's in physically different
memory than what's used for recording, so formatting the
internal (recording) memory doesn't "erase the menu."
