StartRun.
Type in "cmd" and hit Enter.
A command prompt appears. At the command prompt, type this:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
(hit Enter, then type
start devmgmt.msc

This will bring up the Device Manager. Now go ViewShow Hidden
Devices.

Now all those damn ghosted-out nonpresent devices will show. Pay
particular attention to:

Disk Drives
Storage Volumes
USB Controllers

Also check Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Uninstall any ghosted
devices *except* Microsoft devices.

Hey! Cools stuff! I do recognize a lot of what's grayed-out there,
most is fairly recent - various disk drives that I've tried connecting
via the USB port, and there's the TASCAM US-122 that I had for review
and couldn't fully un-install. I'm guessing that it's safe to remove
anything that looks suspicious and is grayed-out - if it's really
needed, it'll just re-install itself next time I plug in that device.
But I think I'll wait until I have my wits about me before I get too
reckless. I'm not sure that there will be much improvement because
there isn't a lot of junk (and most of it is recent additions), but it
doesn't hurt to get rid of stuff that's not needed.

Thanks.
