I never did that, but I used to tape over the "permanent" (no sliding
shutter) write protect holes in 3-1/2" floppys that contained demo
programs so I could recycle them. This was back when 5-1/4" disks were
down to around a dime a piece, but the new 3-1/2" ones were around a
buck (before rebates, of course).

Then AOL would send you a free 3.5" every other week or so, bless their
hearts.
