Gain vs. noise. To achieve a fast ASA rating CCD devices
simply turn up the gain to get a brighter photo. Noise
becomes quite visible in just about every pro-sumer camera
after about ASA200.

To get more signal from a mic when the sound is quiet (dim)
one must amplify both the signal and the inherent noise.
