Some possible reasons:

1. The seller thinks that someone will pay that much. Did you keep
entering bids until you met the reserve? Is that where you got $8,000?

2. The Tape Project. I think I heard that they finally stopped making
tapes, but people were paying $8000 or more for hot-rodded rebuilt Revox
tape decks to play those tapes on.

3. The seller doesn't have a clue.
