Take a straight .wav file. Play it out the S-PDIF output. Now take headphones
and plug them into the "coaxial digital" S-PDIF RCA jack. You should hear
something... it will be horribly distorted but you should hear something that
you can recognize as signal. If that is not the case, then you don't have
signal passing.

Note that S-PDIF can carry all kinds of data formats.... uncompressed
2-channel data at a bunch of rates and word lengths, data compressed with
dts or AC-3 encoding. Just because you can send all these formats does not
mean that the device you're running them into can read any of them. So try
uncompressed 44.1/16 for the time being as you try and track things down.
