Well, if you're just starting out, you should probably get yourself a
couple of SM-57s.

First, they're pretty much a known quantity. Plus a lot of plug-ins are
of th "change the tone of an SM-57 to an ..." variety, which can be fun
to play with if you're thinking just what that $10k tube mic would sound
like.
