Default 16 bit vs 24 bit, 44.1khz vs 48 khz <-- please explain

Is this in any way analogous to how a compressor with attack and release set
fast enough can track the waveform of a bass signal and cause audible
"distortion"?

I shouldn't have used the word "track", but "correlate" doesn't
have much intuitive meaning.

How about this? :
Digital storage is robust because it simplifies a world of infinite
possibilities to a finite subset that can be stored perfectly.

Time is simplified by sampling, which first requires bandlimiting.
Amplitude is simplified by quantization, which first requires
dynamic range limiting.

I hope this doesn't make things worse. You'd probably enjoy Ken
Pohlmann's and especially John Watkinson's books on the topic.
God dwells in the details.
