I believe there are many more Brian Epstein's than Beatles.

As a mentor told me years and years ago (and this is a bit sideways re

subject)
"If you want to be a hit producer, you have to produce a hit band".

Good point, but it's just as obvious to me that producers can "make" stars,
just like they have since the 50s. Fabian over Bobby Darin. Darin could
sing the doors off of almost anyone's "vehicle" yet it's obvious that Fabian
got the starmaker's eye. Today there are just a few producers that can hand
pick people to promote, write and play/record their parts, and it becomes
something that's a bit greater than the directly visible talent of the
artist. Janet Jackson seems to fall into this category, and don't get me
wrong, I think Janet's fine. She's just not worthy of mega-star mention in
talent, although she does seem to do the types of off-stage benefit work
that helps ameliorate her hyped status. Michael, OTOH, earned his success
and regardless of his personal problems and criminal proceedings, still has
the quality of a true star in his presence, his choices in music and his
ability to perform.

I won't get into the star makers, but you know who they are. And at least
they are consistent, but I don't know whether that's good or bad. But more
Brian Epsteins? Somehow I doubt it. Maybe some do things on spec, but
Brian simply did it out of his love for what the Beatles represented, both
in their personalities and in their musical abilities. And we have to
figure that there's still never been a group that actually has the amazing
combination of musical abilities that the Beatles represented, so one has to
assume that it's a once in a lifetime situation. Luckily for the Beatles it
caught Brian's eye. Unfortunately for Brian his efforts probably killed
him.
