When I was a maintenance engineer for a tv studio, manufacturers
claimed that you could plug in firewire cables when the equipment was
powered up. That led to many blown firewire ports until I convinced
users that claim was bs. You could very well have a blown port.

This could very well be...it wouldn't be on the computer side, because I've now tried 6 different Mac and PC systems, all with known working FW ports, but it could be that both ports on the FirePort are damaged and I was sold a known non-working unit...
