Spending $40,000 on musicians is a bit extravagant for a self-produced
record, but not unheard of for a major release.

That means the musicians must be making more than her to play on her album.
Unless she had 40 musicians?

What'd it say, that she was working on this project over a 3-year
period or something? 40 musicians, or the equivalent in work-hours,
over that period wouldn't be out of the question.

However, the musicians get their $1,000 check and walk out the door.
Unless they have a contractual arrangement (like maybe co-writer or
co-producer) instead of just tooter, strummer, or pounder, that's all
they get. She has to wait for her check, but if the project is a
success, she stands to make more than the musicians (and I'm sure
expects that).
