The closest thing to a factory reset is to power up while holding the
Play and Record buttons. But it has to be somewhat alive in order to do
that, and a power surge may have taken out a power supply or some of the
guts.

First, though, since something lights up, try aiming a flashlight at the
screen at an angle. I don't remember if it's an LCD or
electroluminescent display, but if it's an LCD, it could be that the
backlight or its power source has died, and by providing a "frontlight"
you can usually read something if there's anything there.
