It sounds like a high quality, active DI, like the Countryman and Radial
offerings. It really isn't a preamp, IMHO. If they ever decide to take
that next step, I'd be interested.

He has no intention of taking a "next step" in that direction. He
designed it to do a specfic thing and it does that better than anything
else I've ever used. For the intended purpose preamplification happens
at the console.

IMO, in terms of sound quality for string instruments with passive
systems the Countryman isn't even close.
