I have never seen a passive dynamic mic susceptible to #1.
(The pre-amp it is connected to can be of course)

The consensus is number 2. I've done some quick tests to try to find the
source, but I haven't found it yet. The location is hard to access
because it is a busy office. When I get in there one weekend, I'll do
some investigating.

We did a quick session last night, and I noticed that there is still
some noise in the EV ND767a's I bought. It's pretty far down, so I'm not
going to worry too much about it. It could have been there with the
other mics I tested, but I didn't hear it if it was.
