A mixer won't fix that problem. You need software that's capable of
recording on multiple tracks AND you need to know how to do it.

This is a FAQ from users of multitrack software - Cubase etc. It's
quite likely that the initial problem is down to having chosen "What
You Hear" as record source in his soundcard's mixer applet. That
needs sorting out.

But when you want to input microphones and line sources, monitor
inputs plus already-recorded tracks, switch between cans and speakers,
etc. an external mixer is highly convenient. And one that offers
at least a rudimentary second output bus is even more convenient.
The one he mentions will do the job.
