I will say though, these Harrison Labs 12dB pads I placed on the CD in of my receiver have translated into lush, silky sound, with solid bottoms and tops.

Naa - it's just the necessary(?) looser tolerances or extra mechanicals
in carousel players mean they are pretty much all crappy, in my experience.
Yes, if you don't overload your inputs, things generally sound better.
