electronics skills from a long line of engineers?

No. Started out teaching myself, and then got quite a bit of formal
education. After that, it was more self-education.

But, I didn't start out trying to repair a high end tubed preamp as my
first project.

Unfortunately I'm not so lucky and find I have to learn
gradually through experimentation.

The magic word is "gradually".
