Default What went wrong during the DEM debates

Sounds like they may have been using an AUTO mixer.

And they forgot to (and then didn't know how to) turn off the radio lavs for the group 1 moderators.

Looks like each of the 10 candidates had a wireless lav and a podium mic.

???

On a tangential note, I would have set this up so that the moderators
had a panel (or screen) with a radio-style switch bank, one for each
of the podiums. The candidates could switch on a light indicating that
they'd like to speak. When acknowledged, the appropriate switch would
be hit and only the one podium could be heard from. No more interrupting.
It's the equivalent of the 'talking stick'.

Also, a 10-second warning light on the moderator's side would indicate
a wind-down, after which time the mic would shut off. This would eliminate
the awkward butting in from the moderator at the end of alloted time as
the candidate marches on with empty platitudes.
