I am about to begin testing many of these tube numbers in my collection.
Would you help me identify the specific types of these tube numbers that
are most in demand by folks on this newsgroup?

Thanks, Don Campbell

12AX7, 12AU7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AV7, in that order, I would say.

Hehe, that read's like one of your shortest poems, there :)

I need 12AX7s for my amp.

12AX7 is by far the most commonly used preamp tube, with the highest
mu (amplification factor) of 100, Butt...
12AY7 was used in the first stage of many vintage Fender amps, mu of
44. 12AT7 is a common phase inverter tube, mu 60, 12AV7 is seldom seen
in guitar amps for unknown reasons, mu 41, and little 12AU7 has a low
mu of 17 to 20, good 1st stage preamp for amps with multi stages,
because it keeps the gain down to reasonable levels. All good tubes,
butt... what brand names?

I have to look. The 12AX7 is for a preamp though previous designs of the
amp used 6DJ8, which the "matching" power amp also used.

Just say no to 12xx7's

Tubes I like
6sn7 (also the affordable 7n7 for that cool loctal look, 12sn7)
76 (marvelous tube)
6j5 (7a4, closely similar to 1/2 of 6sn7)
6cg7 (9 pin, closely similar to 6sn7)
triode connected ef-86 (very nice sounding, good new production.
6sl7 (also 7f7, 12sl7)

Anyone else have any other favorites which don't cost a fortune
(except 6sn7)?

Just grab that plate in one hand, the chassis in the other,
and FEEL the power of tube audio!!!
(not literally, of course, just kidding. DON'T DO THAT!)

For those who despise the venerable 12AX7 . . . how do you fell about it's
fraternal twin the 6EU7?
