I recently read Dave Royer's Tape Op article titled "One
tube microphone from Berlin and one from Barstow" on the
Tape Op web site:

http://prosoundweb.com/recording/tapeop/tube_mic_25_1.shtml

It certainly looks like an interesting DIY project. I'm
interested in some feedback from anyone that has gone ahead
and made this mod'. How did it sound? Was it worth the
time and effort? Do you have any MP3 samples of how this
mic' sounds in which you compare it to an actual U47 or
possibly some other well known microphones? (I know, I'm
asking a lot ;-) ).

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I did the mod, but don't have a 47 to reference it. But as far as the
improvement of the mic, it's a really nice mic now. I've been using mine for
vocals and some acoustic guitar tracks and I really love it.

I'd call or email Dave Royer if you want some advice. I spoke with him and he
talked me into it. Again, it's such an inexpensive modification and it
produces really great results. Hope this helps.
