Yes, serious, that is assuming this is a service you want to offer.
While I can clean up tops and tails and do some level adjustments, if
someone wants a project mastered I'll send it out. Or I'll give him
the name and number of a few people I would recommend. There are other
things that I'd rather invest my money in, and there are other things
I'd rather do with my time. The client doesn't care who does the work
as long as it's a good job and fits his budget.

This is true. And if they don't care, I don't care, as long as it
doesn't ruin my name. If it's a matter of transferring thousands of
hours of tape to CD, he may not listen to some of it for 10 years (and
may never listen to some of it) so it'll be too late to re-do the job.
On the other hand, they may get a perfectly satisfactory job for the
price they paid. While it's nice to educate the clients, not all of
them need top shelf work all the time.
