i remember reading something about a device which could be affixed to
wooden furniture which acted to send subsonic vibrations through the
furniture. i think it was called an acoustic actuator, but searching
for such on google's giving me nothing.

These have been around for a while.

Known variously to google as "Butt Shaker", "Butt Kicker", "Bass Shaker",
etc. It's up to you to dodge the sex toys...

The technical essence of these products is a robust bass loudspeaker with a
mass replacing or augmenting the speaker cone. You can pour some epoxy into
the cone of a woofer, let it set, attach it to a chair frame, and have a
similar effect.
