I thought that was about some Phase Linear amplifiers.

That was then, this is now.
My take is that the RA-100 is THE modern example of amp that everybody likes
to hate.

Ah, you thought Mike meant the Phase Linear were worth flaming on the basis of
their performance. I thought that the Phase Linears were noted for flames as in
catching fire.

I haven't done an audited survey to determine which is the more popular
view. ;-)

That's correct. As I recall, they sounded pretty good, until they blew
up. And they eventually corrected that, but not before they got to be
known as "Flame Linear."

Curiously enough, RSD / Studiomaster brought out the 800B as a 'ruggedised for the road'
version of the Phase Linear 700s. Forced twin fan cooling and a decent power transformer were
major improvements.
Early models were essentially a rip-off of the Phase Linears' circuitry. There weren't many
high power amplifiers around back then.

Different output stage configuration. Series/Parallel instead of massively
parallel. Basically a fluffed-up Dyna 400 but not a 416.
