Hi, can anyone help me out. I have a song with both midi and audio files and
I want to mixdown so that the volume levels stay exactly the same (or as
close as possible) as they are when played through Cakewalk. Is this
possible?
I know I have to mix the midi files down to an audio track first but even
when I set the soundcard recording level as high as it will go without any
clipping, there is still a noticeable reduction of volume from the original
midi track.
I have also tried just playing all the tracks in Cakewalk and recording from
the Creative recorder (Im using a Soundblaster Live card) but still the
recorded wave file is lacking in volume compared to how it sounds in
Cakewalk. If I try to increase the volume of the recorded file in a sound
editor I just get clipping again.
I just want a wave file of the song how it sounds played in Cakewalk!!
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have been through what you're going through, and I might even have been
using the same soundblaster when I had this problem (pci128???).

anyway, the problem is easy to fix, just spend hours and hours searching for
the best volume of the synth itself, the sb line-in will probably have to be
pumped up high.

good luck,
paul

If you can't increase the peak level without clipping
then you have to compress and increase the average
level.

The easiest way to do this without audio editors
is to use Winamp 2.8 with the DFX plugin to
increase the 'apparant' sound and output the
output to a file.

Or use an audio editor to compress the dynamic
range - signals at clipping level get left as
they are, signals at average level get a mild
boost, and signals at low level get a stronger
boost.
