I just setup a new home system w/ a harmon kardon AVR 55 and four 3-way
homebuilt speakers. A CD or DVD stereo source replicated over the
surround sound is great, however, a computer mp3 source is lacking in
volume in comparison. What can I do to rectify this difference,
considering that I listen to mp3's exlusivly. (flame here!)

Thanks a bunch in advance. I really appreciate it.

I am assuming you checked the multi-media mixer software in the
computer. Also, the main volume control output of the computer will
effect the output, unless you have a specific sound card that has a
fixed line output for external equipment feeding.

If all of this is good, then you should have the sound card properly
checked to see if its output is too low for some reason.

Other than that, I can only suggest a pre-amp of some type. There are
audio line pre-amps used in audio production. The higher quality ones
can be fairly expensive.
