Someday I'll learn how.

It appears that Adobe has now absorbed "Cool Edit" and will be marketing it as
"Audition" (for a lot more money than I can afford).

I'll look around but does anyone happen to know where the trial version of "Cool
Edit" can still be downloaded ?

Yes I know there is problem for it seems that the ordinary Cool Edit 2000
is no longer on line. For cassette or LP transfers one does not need Cool Edit Pro
but only Cool Edit 2000 with a third party plug-in : ClickFix.
The resulting package was much cheaper than the Pro version.

If Adobe does not want to market a small version of Audition similar to Cool Edit 2000
there will probably be a lot of pirate stuff done in a close future.

Not my problem as I own a version of Cool Edit 2000, and I know that it
will satisfy my needs for quite a few years to come.

Allen,

I was able to find Cool Edit and it's a great program. My question is whether it's more
than I really need for transfering 33 rpm Lps and Cassettes to a CD.

I found that my Compaq does have a microphone input jack and I was able to play a 33
through it.

Is there a way I can go from there directly to a CD or do I need Cool Edit (or another
program) ?

You need Cool Edit or some other program if you want to process the WAV file
which I assume has been recorded. Noise reduction, pop / click removal,
normalization, other processes are available.
Then the resulting WAV file is burned to a music CD.
I've not seen any program that will record directly to CD; it would be
possible for some program or other to do so, just a bit clumsy and
inaccurate the way I envision it.
Better in my view to get the material in good shape on your hard drive, then
burn to CD.
